What is Performance Max?

Performance Max (PMax) is a Google Ads campaign type that runs one goal-based campaign across all Google surfaces — Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps — using automated bidding and asset mixing. You supply assets and a conversion goal; Google's AI assembles and places the ads.

The mechanics

PMax shifts the advertiser's job from placement management to asset supply and conversion signal quality: the algorithm can only assemble ads from what you give it. Asset groups hold headlines, descriptions, images, and videos around a theme, and audience signals steer (but don't restrict) targeting. For ecommerce, PMax is tightly coupled to the Merchant Center feed and effectively succeeded Smart Shopping.

Signals that matter

  • Good: every asset group is fully stocked, including real vertical and horizontal video, not auto-generated filler
  • Good: accurate conversion tracking with values, since PMax optimizes to the signal you feed it
  • Bad: judging the campaign after a few days — automated bidding needs a learning period before results stabilize

Putting it to work

PMax quality tracks asset quality: thin asset groups get Google's auto-generated placeholders while rich ones get properly assembled ads across every surface. Generating a full spread of images and short vertical videos with Polaris inside Claude is a practical way to keep asset groups saturated and refreshed as combinations fatigue. See the full ecommerce ads glossary, or put it into practice with the Polaris AI UGC ad generator.

Frequently asked questions

Should video be included in a PMax campaign?
Yes — without supplied video, Google auto-builds one from your images and text, and those templates are rarely flattering. Uploading purpose-made vertical and horizontal videos claims YouTube and Shorts inventory on your terms.
How is PMax different from a standard Shopping campaign?
Standard Shopping serves product listings on Search and Shopping surfaces with more manual control; PMax extends the same feed across all Google inventory with automated bidding and creative assembly, trading control for reach.
Can I see which asset combinations perform?
Google exposes asset ratings and increasingly granular reporting, though less detail than manual campaigns. Use asset-level signals to prune weak creative and replace it, treating PMax as a continuous asset-testing loop.
