Mockup Ads vs. Real Renders: Which to Use When

A practical comparison of static mockup ads and real AI video renders, and when to use each with Polaris inside Claude.

A mockup ad is a static or lightly animated placement of your product in a scene, used mainly to preview layout and messaging; a real render is a finished AI-generated video ad meant to actually run as a UGC-style ad. Use mockups to test concepts fast and real renders once a concept is worth spending on.

What each one is actually for

Mockups are cheap previews — a way to see how a product photo, headline, or layout might look before committing. Real renders, generated through Polaris inside Claude, are finished video ads: an AI actor or scene built around your actual product, with voiceover, music, and captions, meant to be tested and run.

Step-by-step: going from concept to real render

  1. Start with a rough concept. Sketch or mock up the idea — hook, setting, product placement — in whatever tool is fastest for you.
  2. Connect the MCP once. Add polarisugc.com/api/mcp as a connector in Claude and authorize it.
  3. Bring the concept into chat. Attach your product photo (or the mockup itself as a reference) and describe the concept in plain language.
  4. Ask Claude to render it. Claude presents tappable option cards for the pieces you haven't decided: video model (Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1 Quality/Fast, Seedance 2.0, Omni), voice, music, and captions.
  5. Watch the live panel. The real render appears in the conversation as it progresses, typically finishing in 20-180 seconds.
  6. Compare against the mockup. Check whether the rendered motion, pacing, and delivery match what the static concept implied — they often diverge, which is useful information.
  7. Batch a few render variants. Different hooks or deliveries render in parallel and download together as a ZIP.

Pro tips

  • Don't over-polish the mockup stage — its only job is to test the idea, not to predict the final render exactly.
  • Run your script through Copy Judge before committing to a real render, since fixing a weak hook is cheaper on paper than after rendering.
  • If a real render fails, it's auto-refunded, so treat early renders as cheap tests rather than something to get perfect on the first try.
  • Use Recreate once a rendered concept performs, rather than mocking it up again from scratch for the next product.

Honest caveats

A mockup can mislead you about pacing, delivery, and motion since it's static — the only way to know how an ad actually feels is to render it. A real render still needs testing once it exists; neither a mockup nor a first render guarantees performance. Polaris builds real renders around your product images, not from a stock-avatar library, and it won't clone a named real person. In regulated categories, keep claims compliant at both stages — no disease, cure, or guaranteed-result language, whether it's on a mockup slide or in a finished video.

Where the web app fits

The web app is a secondary surface for browsing past renders; the primary workflow for going from concept to real render is a Claude chat once the connector is added, walked through in this guide. See formats on the UGC ads page and plan details on pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mockup ad the same as an AI-generated video ad?
No. A mockup is a static or lightly animated preview of layout and messaging, while a real render is a finished AI video ad generated through Polaris, built around your actual product.
When should I skip the mockup and go straight to a real render?
If the concept is simple and you have a clear product photo and script, it's often faster to render directly and compare a couple of hook variants rather than mocking it up first.
Does a real render always match what the mockup implied?
Not always. Motion, pacing, and delivery can only be judged once something is actually rendered, which is why real renders sometimes diverge from the static concept.
What happens if a real render fails?
Failed renders are auto-refunded, so it's reasonable to treat early renders as low-cost tests rather than something that has to be perfect on the first attempt.
